The Pedestal

Pedestals come in many sizes and materials. Some are simple, some are ornate. In Art galleries, pedestals like the one above, hold three-dimensional Artworks to give the piece attention and to aid viewing.

The Pedestal is an online article that will give attention to one Studio Art student or alum every few months. Thus, please check back and find out who is featured and what fabulous things he/she has been doing lately.

The Pedestal, fall 2006

Featuring recent alumna

Madeline McGrath
mcgrath@uwm.edu.

Madeline McGrath earned a BA from Hanover College in Indiana in 1997 and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2003. She is currently in her second year of studies toward a Master’s of Fine Art at UWM.

While traveling to China this summer, Madeline continued her exploration of physical space the body inhabits and the internal space memory inhabits. In collaboration with Malaysian-born colleague Chun Lok Mah, McGrath and Mah created and exhibited work in Beijing and Milwaukee related to their travels. They created a visual dialogue that addresses their artistic interests as well as the rapidly changing environment in China. The exhibit in China was in Beijing’s best gallery district called 798! (pictures from the trip)

Recently, Madeline participated in an iron pour in Iowa and then had two nights of a collaboration performance. This fall, in addition to her studies and art making, Madeline will be teaching a 3D Concepts Studio Art course at UWM.
